Managing workplace problems and poor performance. The new code of practice on handling workplace problems
The proper handling of problems or poor performance issues is central to good employment relations. Done correctly it helps to keep staff motivated, done incorrectly it creates an unhelpful atmosphere, leads to a perception of unfairness amongst the workforce or even legal action!
In April 2009 a new workplace problem solving process was introduced. This replaced the existing regulations on handling disciplinary and grievance issues. There is now
• Less emphasis on the mechanics of how to manage disciplinary issues, grievances and dismissals
• More flexibility to resolve problems at an early stage and in a way that suits you best.
• An emphasis on better and more direct workplace communication
Whilst many organisations have spent time reviewing their policies have you considered any resulting training needs for your managers?
The new code of practice on handling workplace problems reminds us of the need to train managers in how to deal with problems at an early stage to stop them from escalating where possible. A number of HR Managers have commented to us that they have noted a trend at Tribunal hearings in recent months to ask to those giving evidence:
“What training have you received in handling these issues?”
At OSR we have developed a range of course designed to assist organisations in providing either full or refresher training to their staff. Handling discipline and grievance issues needs to be handled with confidence; yet is often a feared activity. Our emphasis is on the use of discussion and practical exercises to help you understand the principles and develop your skills. Delegates attending will leave with an enhanced ability to manage workplace problems developed through practical application and feedback.
At OSR we understand that all organizations are different and sometimes you may need a course designed specifically for you. We can design a specific programme to meet your requirements and around your own practices and examples – alternatively any of the programmes featured in this directory can be adapted for use in house.
